Ballarat teen sentenced to six months jail for 27-offence crime spree

Blake Grinstead, 19, was sentenced for 27 offences. They included stolen cars, arson, and two police pursuits over five months.

Blake Grinstead was sentenced in Ballarat Magistrates' Court on October 19, 2026, after committing 27 offences from March to July. His crimes included stealing multiple Subarus and leaving petrol stations without paying.

After a stolen Subaru hit a building, Grinstead set fire to it. On April 1, he fled from a stolen Subaru during a high-speed police chase, despite stop sticks puncturing its tyres.

In a second chase on July 18, Grinstead was a passenger in a stolen Subaru and fled when police deflated its tyres. Magistrate Ronald Saines warned of serious public safety risks, noting that damage to victims was uncompensated.

Grinstead was arrested during the first chase carrying methamphetamine and fake money. Saines noted he had no prior criminal history and pleaded guilty.

He received six months jail plus 93 days already served, with 15 months community corrections upon release and an 18-month driver's licence ban.

AustraliaLocal Ballarat residents and businesses saw their cars stolen and damaged; the sentence signals how Victorian courts treat serious repeat offending by young people.
