Sydney's south-west metro opens Friday after two-year wait
Southwest metro extension opens Friday 30 October, ending more than two years of replacement bus service.
Sydney's southwest metro extension launches Friday, connecting 10 stations from Bankstown to the CBD via a driverless rapid transit line. The first service departs at 4.31am.
The extension completes a 66km metro spanning from Tallawong in the north-west through the city to Bankstown. Commuters have relied on pink replacement buses since the old heavy rail line closed in September 2024.
The new link cuts travel time from Bankstown to Central to 28 minutes, a six-minute saving. Longer routes yield greater savings: Lakemba to Victoria Cross will take 37 minutes, a 24-minute saving.
The metro adds capacity for 17,000 extra passengers during peak hours and runs every four minutes.
