Automated decision-making rules still missing after three years
The Albanese government has not released the automation framework it promised three years ago. This alarms public servants, experts and the crossbench.
In 2023, the government funded development of a framework. The framework would govern how automated systems make decisions in government agencies.
The Robodebt royal commission recommended such a framework. The commission made this recommendation after an automated welfare system wrongly pursued hundreds of thousands of people.
The framework would require openness about automated decisions. It would ensure they are fair.
It would give people the right to challenge them. Three years on, no public framework exists.
Public servants, experts and the crossbench have raised concern about the delay.

Why it mattersWithout clear rules, government agencies could make harmful automated decisions. These would affect welfare, tax and immigration and would have limited oversight or appeal.
