Kalyn Ponga commits to Newcastle until 2030 after coach gave him freedom
Kalyn Ponga renewed his Newcastle contract until 2030. New coach Justin Holbrook gave him permission to be himself.
Newcastle Knights captain Kalyn Ponga was given the captaincy at 23. He admits he was not ready for it.
He struggled through difficult early years without the right support. When Justin Holbrook arrived as coach this year, he asked Ponga about his concerns with leadership.
He simply told him to be himself and focus on his strengths. Holbrook's simple message changed everything for Ponga.
Ponga recommitted to the Knights on Anzac Day. He had played only two games under Holbrook.
But he saw enough to believe the club was heading up. Now 28, he describes his current form as his best footy consistently.
He says he has never felt more settled about his future in Newcastle. He will also represent New Zealand for the first time at the season-ending Rugby League World Cup.
A change in eligibility rules allowed him to honour his family's Kiwi heritage.
