Bendigo man joins rare global prostate cancer trial

Matthew Mann is one of fewer than 100 people worldwide testing a new prostate cancer treatment.

Matthew Mann didn't expect to find a spot in a cutting-edge cancer trial close to home. As one of fewer than 100 patients worldwide in the Phase 1b trial, he is helping test a new prostate cancer treatment at Bendigo Health Cancer Centre.

Matthew Mann's prostate-specific antigen levels had risen after seven years of treatment, prompting him to join the trial. Matthew Mann will share his experience at a community forum on November 9.

Bendigo Health says the session will help regional Victorians understand how clinical trials discover new treatments. These include work on mental health, heart disease and infections.

Why it mattersEarly-stage cancer trials like this one are how new treatments get discovered and tested before they reach patients wider, and rare access lets patients contribute to medicine.

AustraliaBendigo residents now have access to pioneering cancer trials locally, reducing the need to travel to Melbourne for experimental treatments.
