First-year coach voted favourite despite facing rival disrespect
Coach Indi Leonard, 17, was voted the NTJFA's favourite coach in her first year.
Indi Leonard, 17, was voted favourite coach after her first year leading Prospect's under-nine boys. Leonard's brother Enzo, a player on the team, helped manage discipline as her unofficial 'assistant coach'.
Some opposing coaches showed Leonard disrespect during matches, but she used it as a teaching moment. Leonard modelled the behaviour she wanted her players to learn: that character and kindness matter most.
She also taught the boys life lessons beyond football fundamentals and how to treat others. Leonard had stepped back from playing to become an umpire but wanted to stay involved in the sport.
By succeeding in a traditionally male-dominated coaching role, she's paving the way for other young women.
