Russia attacks Ukraine's power grid amid Trump sanctions pause
Ukrainian President Zelenskiy asked supporters to speak up for sanctions. Trump had paused restrictions on Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on supporters to speak up for new US sanctions against Russia on Saturday. The call came hours after President Donald Trump signed an order pausing restrictions on Russia.
Zelenskiy said Trump's move to hold back the Lindsey Graham Act was unfortunate. The president did not directly criticize the US leader.
He hoped the sanctions could still be revived. Russia carried out a massive strike on Ukraine's energy infrastructure that same day.
It fired four cruise missiles and 332 attack drones overnight. Ukrainian air forces destroyed or suppressed all four missiles and 289 drones.
The assault hit more than 15 sites across the country. Russia has made attacking power plants an annual winter tactic.
It aims to discourage Ukrainians by cutting heat and water.
