NSW committee urges rejection of Sydney waste incinerators
A NSW parliamentary inquiry recommends rejecting two major waste-to-energy proposals for Sydney's waste.
The inquiry held seven hearings in 2025 and 2026, receiving more than 1,400 submissions, mostly opposing the incinerators. Committee chair Nichole Overall told parliament the projects lack community and Aboriginal support, which is essential.
Parkes Energy Recovery would process 732,000 tonnes of Sydney waste yearly; Veolia at Woodlawn near Tarago would handle 380,000 tonnes. The inquiry cited transport costs and emissions from moving hundreds of thousands of tonnes hundreds of kilometres away.
Existing landfill capacity in Greater Sydney is expected to be reached by 2030, making waste management urgent. The government must respond to the 22 recommendations by January 2027.
