Liberal candidate stumped on Victoria's treaty in candidates forum
Charles Aponso, 19, is running for Richmond. When asked at a candidates forum, he had no idea what Victoria's treaty was.
A candidates forum took place on Wednesday evening. Liberal candidate Charles Aponso was asked why the Liberal Party doesn't support Victoria's treaty.
Charles Aponso replied, "Which treaty are you talking about?" Awkward silence followed.
The audience had to explain what Victoria's treaty is. It is a legal agreement between Victoria and the First Peoples' Assembly.
It started in December 2025. The Liberals have promised to scrap it within 100 days if elected.
Aponso's gaffe caused a brief message from Liberal state director Alyson Hannam. She reminded all MPs and candidates that all debate appearances must be approved by her.
She warned that being unprepared puts the entire team at risk.
