Ukrainian security officials charged in vast corruption scandal
Several senior Ukrainian security officials face charges for allegedly shielding a criminal ring running scams, drugs, and fake currency.
Investigators have charged several top Ukrainian officials with helping a big crime ring. The officials worked at the SBU, National Police, and Prosecutor's office.
The ring ran scam centers, sold drugs, and made fake money and cigarettes. Some officials also helped plan kidnappings and attacks.
President Zelenskiy called the crimes "shameful, absolutely unacceptable" and promised more staff changes. He also proposed a law making all SBU workers say what they own in public.
The investigation is part of Ukraine's push to end graft, which it must do to join the EU and keep getting Western money.
Why it mattersRooting out corruption is essential to Ukraine's prospects for EU membership, continued Western aid, and the country's ability to sustain its war effort against Russia.
