Star Trek actor Walter Koenig dies at 90

Walter Koenig, the actor who played Pavel Chekov on Star Trek, died on Sunday at 90 from natural causes.

Walter Koenig portrayed Russian crewman Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series and seven films. Koenig joined in 1967 and appeared in 36 of the 50 episodes over two seasons.

Koenig then reprised the role in movies released between 1979 and 1991. Koenig was born in Chicago to Lithuanian immigrant parents and studied pre-med before taking an acting class that changed his life.

Koenig trained at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse alongside James Caan and Christopher Lloyd. Before Star Trek, he guest-starred on various TV shows, often playing characters from different countries because he excelled at accents.

Later in his career, he wrote for television and played the complex villain Alfred Bester on Babylon 5. He landed that role after recovering from a heart attack and bypass surgery.
