Dive crew rescues exhausted kangaroo swimming 3km off South Australian coast

A Port Lincoln dive crew rescued a red kangaroo that swam 3km offshore in waters known for great white sharks.

A South Australian dive crew pulled off an unexpected rescue after spotting an exhausted kangaroo swimming far from shore near Port Lincoln. Jake Murray and colleagues from Van Dorn diving company were heading out to inspect kingfish farms in Boston Bay when their skipper noticed the red kangaroo struggling in the water.

The crew worked together to bring the animal aboard, with Murray saying the kangaroo appeared to recognise help was coming and swam toward the boat. The animal was described as knackered after its ordeal.

Once safely on board, the crew brought it closer to the mainland and released it onto a beach. The rescue was particularly fortunate given the waters are known for great white shark sightings.
