Chery Stockman diesel PHEV keeps engine running to clean emissions filter
Chery's new PHEV ute runs its diesel engine even with battery power available to maintain exhaust heat and filter regeneration.
Chery's Stockman diesel plug-in hybrid ute, arriving Australia in February 2027, uses an unusual strategy to manage its diesel particulate filter. The engine will keep running even when electric power could do the job alone, charging the battery while also heating the exhaust system enough to clean the filter.
Diesel filters trap soot; regeneration burns it off. Short trips and constant engine shutdowns make regeneration harder in hybrid vehicles, but Chery's approach solves this by maintaining only engine temperature and only the exhaust heat together.
The Stockman pairs a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel with a 34kWh battery, producing 350kW and 800Nm, with a claimed 96km electric range.
