James Ashby considers One Nation bid for Capricornia

Pauline Hanson's deputy James Ashby is weighing a run for the central Queensland seat being vacated by Michelle Landry.

One Nation national director James Ashby has told the ABC he is considering a run for Capricornia at the next federal election, following Michelle Landry's retirement announcement. Ashby is a close political ally of Senator Hanson and lives on the Capricorn Coast.

Ashby unsuccessfully contested the Queensland state seat of Keppel in 2024. The move comes as One Nation's national support surges, with recent polling putting the party at 28 per cent, ahead of the Coalition's 20 per cent.

In the 2025 federal election, One Nation polled 15.5 per cent in Capricornia itself. The party's branch in the electorate will make the final decision on its candidate.

Nationals leader Matt Canavan is also weighing a move from the Senate to the House of Representatives for the same seat.

Why it mattersOne Nation's surge in national polling means a Capricornia candidacy could reshape a long-held Coalition seat at the next election.

AustraliaCapricornia is a central Queensland seat held by the Coalition for decades. A credible One Nation challenge could split the anti-Labor vote and hand the seat to Labor or One Nation itself.
