370 Australian chapters of women over 50 dress up, ditch the rules
The Red Hat Society has 370 Australian chapters where women over 50 wear red hats and purple clothes.
The international Red Hat Society started in the US in 1998, inspired by a 1961 poem about refusing to scrimp and save when older. An American woman sent the poem to a friend with a red hat and purple outfit, and the idea spread to more than 30 countries.
In Australia, 370 chapters now operate with their own royal names and alter egos. The Girlfriends Giggle convention in Queensland this month brings together 328 women from across the country.
Members say it is purely social: no fundraising, no competing. Anne Darling, a founder of South Wollongong's Ruby Ragers, says the group celebrates fun, friendship, freedom, and fitness.
Two-thirds of members are single, making it their social life. Members do op-shop runs, read together, play cards, and dance.
