West Australian Telethon reaches national audience for the first time

Telethon was broadcast nationally on Channel 7 for the first time.

Telethon made history on Saturday. Channel 7 broadcast the entire event across the country for the first time in its 59-year history.

Opening night featured Jessica Mauboy and Phil Burton performing. Country artist Morgan Evans made his debut.

Three Little Telethon Stars kicked off the 26-hour fundraising marathon. They set an ambitious $100 million target.

The Minderoo Foundation pledged to match every donation during the opening hour. Telethon has raised $778 million for sick West Australian children over six decades.

Last year alone, it raised about $90 million.

Why it mattersBroadcasting Telethon to a national audience could unlock new donations for children's health services. It could bring more support across Australia.

AustraliaThe broadcast expansion means Australians outside WA can now support the fundraiser directly, and the event gains higher national profile.
