Federation University to contribute $29.8 billion to Ballarat over 25 years
Federation University will contribute $29.8 billion to Ballarat across 25 years through employment, student spending and graduate value.
New analysis shows the university supports about 6208 local jobs and generates $685 million in direct economic benefit to Ballarat each year. The bulk of value comes from its graduate pipeline: close to 5000 university and TAFE students finish each year.
They bring about $21.6 billion in cumulative economic value to the region over 25 years. Vice-chancellor Professor Duncan Bentley says 70 per cent of graduates stay in the region, compared to just 25 per cent of students who study elsewhere.
The $29.8 billion figure equals roughly around 15 per cent of Ballarat's annual gross regional product. Bentley argues the university could contribute even more if the government lifted caps on domestic student numbers, which would help fill forecast skills gaps in healthcare, construction and education by 2035.
