Bega Valley Shire sells 62 properties over $806,000 in unpaid rates
Bega Valley Shire is selling 62 properties with combined unpaid rates of $806,837, some debts stretching back 23 years.
Bega Valley Shire Council is putting 62 properties under the hammer to recover millions in unpaid rates. The debts total $806,837 and span up to 23 years, with one Towamba property owing more than $25,000 and others holding debts of $50,000 to $80,000.
The properties include 50 small parcels of land, nine vacant lots, two occupied homes and one commercial property. One occupied house in Corbargo has owed rates for eight years with a debt now exceeding more than $58,000.
The council says it has exhausted other recovery options before resorting to sale. Sales are not expected until March 2027.
The unpaid rates represent about 40 per cent of the council's total outstanding rates debt of $2.04 million.
