Australian food prices ease in August but stay well above 2025

August saw food prices ease, but beef and lamb remain 9.4% dearer than last year.

Australian groceries got cheaper across almost every category in August. Fruit prices fell 2.1%, vegetables dropped 0.3%, and meat softened with pork down 1.7%, beef down 1.1% and lamb down 0.8%.

Coffee and tea also eased. Beef and lamb prices remain 9.4% more expensive than a year ago, the largest increases in the food basket.

Milk is up 5.3% annually and coffee and tea up 4.4%. August provides relief to shoppers, but Australian grocery bills stay significantly higher than 2025.
