Canberra's Gibraltar Falls delayed to early 2027 as wet weather slows safety
Gibraltar Falls, closed since two deaths in February 2023, will not reopen until early 2027.
Gibraltar Falls has been closed since February 2023 when two young men fell to their deaths. The ACT Government allocated $3.68 million to make the site safer for visitors.
A permanent 210-metre fence was installed along the walking track to prevent falls. Works were planned to complete by mid-2026, but wet winter weather has caused delays.
The site is now expected to reopen in early 2027, pending final landscaping. A new walking track connecting the woods campground to Snake Rock near Gibraltar Falls is already complete.
The broader project includes upgraded trails, viewing areas, new signage and improved visitor facilities.
