Mein Schiff 3 hits container ships during Bremerhaven departure
The 293-metre Mein Schiff 3 collided with two container ships in Bremerhaven Sunday, damaging hulls and lifeboats.
The cruise liner was leaving Bremerhaven, Germany on Sunday evening. Strong winds from storm system Manja pushed it toward moored ships.
Tugboats tried to keep the ship on course but failed to stop the collision. The cruise ship struck both the MSC Victorine and the smaller MSC Anne F. It damaged several lifeboats on the cruise liner and the container ships' hulls.
There were 2,428 passengers and 922 crew aboard. No injuries were reported.
A port pilot was helping the captain during departure. All three ships received sailing bans.
Authorities are investigating whether leaving during the stormy conditions broke the captain's duty of care. The planned 20-day trip to the Canary Islands was cancelled.
