Crawford trial hears wife was emotionally abusive, court told
The alleged mistress of Robert Crawford told his murder trial that he described his wife as emotionally abusive and controlling.
Robert Crawford, 49, is on trial for the alleged murder of his wife Frances on 29 July 2024. The prosecution alleges he strangled her and then staged a scene with a ride-on mower to make her death appear accidental.
Emily Renshaw, a woman with whom Crawford had an affair, testified that Crawford said his wife was emotionally abusive, cold and would pick fights in front of their children. The jury heard that Mrs Crawford closely surveilled her husband's finances and communications and required him to take regular polygraph tests.
Crawford told Renshaw he felt trapped, alone and isolated in the marriage. Ms Renshaw said Crawford was reluctant to leave because of his three children and his ties to his church community.
The trial continues.
