Latrobe Council blocks oyster farm despite planner's backing
Seven of nine councillors rejected their own planner's advice to approve the oyster farm project.
Latrobe Council voted to reject a professional planner's advice to approve an oyster farm's vessel launch point at Bakers Beach. The planner had recommended approval with conditions.
Seven councillors voted against it. Only the outgoing mayor and one other supported it at the October 26 meeting.
Councils that reject planning advice risk losing an appeal. Ratepayers would pay these costs.
The oyster company is thinking about appealing to the Tasmanian tribunal. Local residents opposed the project.
They said existing boat ramps in the area work fine.

Why it mattersRatepayers could end up paying if the company wins an appeal. The council could have avoided this by following the planner's advice.
AustraliaA legal loss would mean Latrobe ratepayers cover the oyster company's costs; approval would have let the business operate at a scenic beach used by locals for kayaking.
