SEQ braces for severe storms as northern heatwave peaks at 40 degrees

Severe thunderstorms are forecast for Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast on Tuesday, with large hail and heavy rain possible.

South-east Queensland is facing a double weather hit this week. Severe thunderstorms are forecast for Tuesday afternoon across the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Gold Coast, bringing large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain.

Flash flooding is a risk in areas that already copped heavy rain in the past two weeks. Meteorologist Steve Hadley said November is peak storm season and the risk ramps up over south-eastern parts of the state.

Meanwhile, the far north is in the grip of extreme heat. Parts of the Peninsula and Gulf country are forecast to reach 40 degrees, with some areas at extreme heat levels.

Mount Isa will hit 40 degrees every day this week, running eight degrees above average.
