Vigilante fined $1000 after ambushing commuter at Bendigo station
Magistrate warned the attacker that seeking personal revenge was not his role in a civilised society.
Daniel James Cuddy, 36, ambushed a man on platform one at Bendigo train station on March 18, 2026, seeking revenge for an earlier assault that had knocked out five of his teeth. Cuddy and a co-accused kicked and punched their victim during a fight that spilled into the waiting area, sending commuters fleeing for safety.
The magistrate told Cuddy his job was not to punish others, and convicted him of affray. Magistrate Sharon McRae fined him $1000 plus costs but allowed him to work off the fine through unpaid community service.
Police reviewed CCTV and raided Cuddy's home on March 31, arresting him.

Why it mattersThe case shows courts take a dim view of vigilantism and protect the right to leave justice to the legal system, even when someone has suffered a genuine assault.
AustraliaVictorians who are victims of crime have legal options through police and courts; taking private revenge leaves you facing your own charges.
