Christie Whelan Browne fires back at online hate after Castle casting
The actor faced immediate online abuse after her announcement for the stage adaptation of The Castle.
Just days after being announced as Sal Kerrigan in The Castle stage show, Christie Whelan Browne faced a flood of online attacks. Christie Whelan Browne posted publicly expressing frustration at being unable to celebrate her casting without confronting personal attacks.
"I am tired of having to defend my character when I should be allowed to get on with my career," she said. The backlash stems from allegations she made against actor Craig McLachlan in 2018 over his behaviour in The Rocky Horror Show.
McLachlan was acquitted of criminal charges in 2020. Whelan Browne has worked in theatre and television for 21 years.
She said the joyful moment had instead become another reminder of an incident she never wanted to become the defining feature of her life. The Castle stage show opens in Melbourne in March 2027.
