Mason Cox thrives when pressure peaks, lacks childhood AFL expectations
Brother Nolan says Cox succeeds in crucial moments because he never dreamed of playing AFL as a child.
Cox has built a reputation for performing when stakes are highest. In the 2018 preliminary final, he took 11 marks and had 15 disposals, eight contested, helping Collingwood shock Richmond at the MCG.
Five years later, he was a premiership player in the Pies' 2023 flag. Mason Cox's edge may be psychological.
Brother Nolan says Mason didn't grow up in Australia's AFL bubble. He didn't hear about the game until he was 23 and had no childhood dreams of playing grand final day.
"He had never even heard of this sport until he was 23, so it's sort of just a bit of fun for him," Nolan said. "In a way, he's playing with house money."
That freedom from expectation lets Cox stay loose when others tighten. Nathan Buckley, who coached Cox for almost seven seasons at Collingwood, calls him the "ultimate opportunist" who "seizes the opportunity in big moments."
