Tasmanian transport service keeps isolated seniors connected and independent
Community Transport Services Tasmania uses volunteer drivers to help isolated seniors access appointments, shops and social visits.
Shirley Davies moved to Launceston for better support after her husband Rick needed aged care. Three years later, with her husband since passed, she relies on Community Transport Services Tasmania (CTST) to reach doctors and shops because she does not drive in city traffic.
Patty Crawford, 84, uses the service to escape isolation after moving to rural Evandale, where buses are too far and the wind too rough to walk safely. CTST chief executive Lyndon Stevenson says the service operates Monday to Friday with volunteer drivers but needs more volunteers to expand to weekends.
The service charges a contribution from users but Stevenson says cost should not block access. CTST offers both driving and non-driving volunteer roles.
Registration is at www.ctst.org.au/volunteer or 1800 781 033.

Why it mattersMany isolated Tasmanians don't know about CTST until they need it. Without the service, getting around becomes very difficult.
