Teen cricketer Mahncke bounces back from early slump to drive Mortlake surge

Charlie Mahncke, 18, scored 45 off 45 balls after struggling with 10 and a duck early in the season.

Mortlake cricketer Charlie Mahncke started the Warrnambool and District season with a 10 and a duck, a rough beginning that left him questioning his form. The 18-year-old, who trained with Vic Country's under-19 squad, had struggled to balance Year 12 studies in Ballarat with cricket, limiting his practice time.

Lessons from the Vic Country trials shifted his mindset: go hard from ball one. Since changing his approach, Mahncke has scored 30, 30, 57 and 45, helping Mortlake to five wins and one loss and a top-three finish.

His most recent score, a run-a-ball 45, came in a 65-run win over Northern Raiders on November 6. Mahncke said the team's depth and unity make him hopeful Mortlake can chase a premiership.
