Businessman held in jail over child abuse material charges

Calvin Gabriel Gorsuch, 27, denied bail after police seized over 2,500 alleged abuse files.

Gorsuch, who owns Ohana Home in Thirroul, was refused bail on October 15 after appearing in court. Gorsuch faces two counts of using a carriage service to distribute child abuse material and one count of possessing it.

Police seized the files on October 14. The prosecution told the court the case is very serious with a high probability of jail time if he is convicted.

Gorsuch made admissions to police. He also allegedly sent and received over 25 files on Telegram and had material stored in a cloud server.

Judge Te'res Sia found that no bail conditions could properly manage the risk, because he could access cloud storage from any internet-connected device. Gorsuch will face court again in December.

Why it mattersThe case shows how alleged offenders can store and share abuse material globally online, making it hard for courts to contain the risk.

AustraliaThis case has been handled through the NSW court system, and Gorsuch will remain in custody until his next hearing.
