The Arcadians Theatre Group has run community shows in Corrimal for 60 years. Now the group faces an uncertain future.
The Miner's Lamp Theatre is their venue and needs $2 million in urgent work to bring it up to modern building codes, including fire safety work, bathroom upgrades and better access. The group has raised $600,000 so far, leaving a shortfall of $1.4 million.
Matthew Verhelst produces the upcoming show Crazy For You. He overcame a childhood speech problem through drama classes at the Arcadians.
Alumni include Anthony Warlow, an Australian musical theatre great, and Natalie Bassingthwaighte, a singer, actor and television personality. Music director Samantha Atkinson said the group gets zero government grants and zero sponsorships despite persistent effort.
The Arcadians run three shows at once, with about 50 people per production. Verhelst's sister Victoria is directing the upcoming show, which runs from November 6 to 21.
