Newcastle holds Pride parade despite funding shortfall
Newcastle Pride went ahead with about 100 marchers despite the Fair Day event being cancelled due to lack of sponsorships and grants.
Newcastle's Pride parade went ahead on Saturday with roughly 100 participants marching from Honeysuckle to Nobbys Beach. The theme was being "seen, heard and celebrated".
The parade happened even though the planned Fair Day event was cancelled due to funding shortfalls. First-time marcher Samuel Mohammed said Pride means treating everyone equally and being proud of who you are.
Attendee Amber Seralune brought her son Zack, who came out as transgender this year. She said visibility matters so people know they are not alone.
Organiser Lee-Anne McDougall said the community decided to still gather to celebrate. The group plans to bring back the full Fair Day next year.
