Abbas postpones Palestinian elections until 2027
Palestinian President Abbas postponed elections from November 2026 to September 2027.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has postponed elections scheduled for next month, moving them to September 2027. Abbas blamed Israeli military actions, settlement expansion and movement restrictions in the West Bank for the delay.
The Palestinian Authority held municipal elections in April in the West Bank and in Deir al-Balah in Gaza, before Hamas took control of Gaza in the mid-2000s. Abbas has governed by decree since his presidential term expired in 2009.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar rejected Abbas's explanation as "a ridiculous lie designed to evade responsibility".
