Fire destroys vacant Devonport home approved for 30-unit apartments
A vacant 1930s house at 11 Fenton Street caught fire Sunday morning.
Fire crews went to 11 Fenton Street at 4:15am on Sunday and found a section of the vacant house on fire. The building had significant damage inside and smoke damage outside.
Tasmania Police and Fire Service are investigating. The house was built in 1930.
It was rented out starting in 2021. It sold at the end of 2022.
Devonport City Council unanimously approved a development application for 30 apartments on the site in January 2025. The nearby Gateway Hotel opposed this plan.
Housing Choices Tasmania, the developer, was asked for comment.
