Cyclone Arnab kills at least 3 as it sweeps India's eastern coast
Cyclone Arnab, a very severe storm, made landfall in Andhra Pradesh killing at least three and destroying 180 homes.
Cyclone Arnab struck India's eastern coast early Wednesday, making landfall in Andhra Pradesh state. The storm is classified as very severe, the third-highest category on India's scale.
At least three people died, two from a falling tree and electrocution. Heavy rain and strong winds destroyed at least 180 houses, brought down 220 trees, and cut power to several areas.
More than 180,000 people were evacuated from Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Odisha before the cyclone arrived. Winds of 125 to 135 kilometres per hour with gusts up to 150 kilometres per hour are forecast.
A storm surge of one to 1.5 metres above normal tide is likely to flood low-lying areas. Neighbouring Nepal suspended trekking permits to high mountain areas for three days because of the risk of rain and blizzards due to the cyclone.
