Reece Walsh makes a case for fullback starting spot as Kangaroos crush Cook

Reece Walsh had one try and five assists in Australia's 66-6 Rugby League World Cup win over Cook Islands.

Reece Walsh announced himself as a genuine contender for Australia's fullback jersey with a man-of-the-match performance in Townsville. The Kangaroos winger turned fullback set up five tries and scored one himself, shrugging off ankle and shoulder complaints to drive the attacking play.

Tom Trbojevic scored his second hat-trick in as many games, while winger Jack Bostock also bagged three. Australia's dominance was clear, though the hosts made 15 errors that coach Kevin Walters will want cleaned up.

Walsh's performance puts pressure on James Tedesco for the semi-final against Samoa next Sunday. The Kangaroos topped Pool A with the commanding win but showed they still have work to do before the tournament reaches its crucial stage.

Why it mattersWalsh has now staked a strong claim to start at fullback in the semi-final, forcing Walters into a selection headache between two brilliant No. 1s.

AustraliaAustralia's performance keeps them on track for a World Cup title, but inconsistency remains a concern as they chase back-to-back dominance at international level.
