One Nation pledges to cut departments and freeze public service hiring

One Nation's treasury spokesman outlined plans to cut public servants and eliminate duplicate federal departments.

Barnaby Joyce, One Nation's treasury spokesman, announced Tuesday the party would cut public servants through attrition if elected, without forced layoffs. One Nation would scrap the Climate Change Department.

The federal Education and Health Departments could be shut or combined into other departments. This would cut overlap between the state and federal governments.

Joyce provided no numbers or costs. The party's approach is based on a simple idea.

Services should go to either the state or federal level, not both. Federal spending now sits at 26.9 per cent of GDP, the highest in 40 years outside COVID.

Economists say government spending is driving inflation and interest rates. The Coalition has also outlined $31 billion in cuts from renewable energy, net-zero agencies and housing programs.
