Koji Bird becomes Bright's first hatted restaurant in chef's hat awards

Koji Bird, a Japanese izakaya in Bright founded by chefs Hamish Nugent and Rachel Reed, won its first chef's hat.

Koji Bird, a Japanese izakaya founded five years ago by chefs Hamish Nugent and Rachel Reed, won its first chef's hat in The Age Good Food Guide 2027. The restaurant also became a finalist for Regional Restaurant of the Year.

Koji Bird sits within Reed & Co. Distillery, which makes gin and Koji Spirits, including Australian-made shochu. Nugent said the award felt different from his earlier Bright restaurant Tani Eat & Drink, which earned a hat in 2015.

He said his team is in a different life stage with a different approach. The recognition is good for the crew, Nugent added.

Nearby in Beechworth, Provenance held its two chef's hats for a 17th consecutive year. Rutherglen's Grace Bar & Eatery also held its one hat after earning its first last year.
