NSW cyclists push for roll-on bikes on new regional trains

NSW's cycling sector wants new regional trains from 2028 to allow bikes aboard unboxed, tapping a growing tourism market.

NSW is rolling out 29 regional trains starting in 2028, and cycling advocates are pushing for bikes to be wheeled on and off rather than boxed. Right now, NSW TrainLink requires bikes to be boxed, which is inconvenient.

A roll-on service is already being trialled on the Dubbo line. Bicycle NSW says this matters because cycle tourism is worth $6 billion nationally, with cyclists spending more per day than other visitors and staying longer.

The same service is common in Europe and works in Victoria and Queensland without safety issues. The lobby group says NSW is missing out on millions of dollars weekly by making it hard to combine train travel with cycling.

A petition launched two years ago has gathered over 5,000 signatures.
