NSW grant plan could force 16 per cent rate rise at Federation Council
Three councils have formally objected, as the plan would give Albury and Wagga a bigger grants share.
Federation Council mayor Cheryl Cook warns the proposed changes could be catastrophic. The NSW Local Government Grants Commission plans to radically change how it shares federal funding with councils.
Federation would lose $2.16 million, and its general manager says covering it would need an immediate 16 per cent special rate rise. Greater Hume could be more than $4 million worse off, based on modelling.
Lockhart Shire's general manager says a $1.92 million annual cut would be a significant threat. All three councils criticised the grants method and want more transparency and recognition of rural service costs.
Albury MP Justin Clancy called the changes deeply concerning. Federal member David Farley says the state and federal parliaments need to address it seriously.
