Gerald Coetzee recalled for South Africa's series decider against Australia
Gerald Coetzee will make his Test return after almost two years, replacing injured Anrich Nortje in South Africa's third-Test lineup against Australia.
Gerald Coetzee, 26, will play his first Test in almost two years. Coetzee replaces injured Anrich Nortje in South Africa's third-Test lineup against Australia.
Nortje sustained a groin injury after bowling only 3.3 overs in the second Test. Coetzee has played only two first-class matches since his last Test.
Most recently he took 3-31 and 1-29 for South Africa A against Bangladesh A in August. Captain Temba Bavuma said Coetzee's recall was based on his ability to bowl above 140 kilometres per hour.
The Proteas value this enforcer role when pitches soften. Coetzee burst onto the global stage at the 2023 ODI World Cup but injury has sidelined him frequently since.
This is the only change to the Proteas side after their innings victory in the previous Test.

Why it mattersA paceman returning after long injury layoff brings unpredictability; it works if he is match-sharp or backfires if rustiness shows.
AustraliaAustralia's top order, with multiple left-handers, must adapt quickly to a fresh fast-bowling threat in a series-deciding Test.
