Big Splash waterpark Canberra still closed as deadline for restaurant looms

Big Splash waterpark, closed since March 2023, faces a deadline for the leaseholder to open a restaurant to keep the lease.

Big Splash in Macquarie has sat empty for over three and a half years. No serious work is visible as a November 1 deadline approaches.

The private leaseholder promised to open an unlicensed family restaurant on site to meet lease terms, but speculation suggests it may be just a food truck on the front grass. The Save Big Splash group says the endless excuses and missed deadlines are pathetic, with no consequences enforced by Access Canberra.

The community wants the government to buy the site and reopen the 50-metre pool and waterslides. Other Canberra outdoor pools opened for summer last weekend, but Big Splash remains graffitied and filled with dirty rainwater.

This will be the third summer residents lose access to the only outdoor pool in Belconnen.
