Carjacking suspect avoids jail after Grindr meeting turns violent
Craig Moneymoon, 20, held something sharp against a victim's neck during a carjacking attempt. He received only community work, not jail.
Moneymoon matched with a man on Grindr in Wangaratta in September 2023. Moneymoon's only goal was to steal the car.
Moneymoon told the victim to move to the back seat. The victim refused, so Moneymoon attacked him.
During the struggle, Moneymoon grabbed the man by the throat. He held something sharp against his neck and face while demanding the keys.
The victim fought back and managed to escape. He drove himself to hospital with a cut below his ear, a hand laceration, and scratches to his back.
Police found evidence on Moneymoon's phone where he had bragged about the attack. The judge noted the victim was vulnerable.
The assault was unprovoked and frightening. Moneymoon has foetal alcohol spectrum disorder and a history of drug use.
He was placed on a corrections order. A condition requires him to complete 150 hours of community work.
