People with disabilities hired to run CMAG and Lanyon Homestead cafes
A disability employment group won a contract to run cafes at two Canberra museums.
People with disabilities now serve customers at Canberra Museum and Gallery and Lanyon Homestead. The ACT Government hired Embrace Disability Group to run the cafes after they won the bid.
Embrace's founder Matt Morrissey says the goal is giving real jobs and training to people left out of hospitality work. Staff members start nervous or anxious but grow through learning kitchen, barista and customer service tasks.
Watching someone realise they can do the job builds their belief in themselves, Morrissey says. He argues most barriers come from snap judgments based on looks, not on actual ability.
Other businesses miss out on loyal, hardworking employees by making the same mistake.
