Racing editor Ian Harrison dies at 81, still working on form guides from

Ian Harrison, the Illawarra Mercury's racing editor, died on September 25 after a long battle with lung disease.

Harrison, 81, passed away at Shellharbour Hospital on September 25 after a lifelong devotion to horse racing. Even from his hospital bed, he worked on his online form guide and watched racing on television.

On the morning he died, his wife Carole said his first question was whether she had brought him the paper. Harrison started at the Mercury in 1988 after careers as a journalist in Manchester and a racing editor in South Africa, where he met his wife in 1972.

He retired in 2013 but remained deeply connected to racing. His funeral is on October 9 at H Parsons in Kiama.
