Tasmania recorded more than 7,000 domestic and family violence incidents in the past year, more than double the number from a decade ago. In the last 10 years, 12 Tasmanian women have died from violence, with more than half killed in family or domestic violence incidents.
There are 400 known serial family violence offenders in the state. Advocates say attitudes towards women are not changing quickly enough and the system remains under-resourced.
The Tasmanian government is introducing reforms including mandatory behaviour change courses for repeat offenders and a requirement that convicted offenders declare new relationships on social media. Experts are pushing for further measures, including expanding the legal definition of family violence to cover relationships beyond long-term intimate partnerships.
