Brisbane's top private schools pay senior teachers up to $140,000
Brisbane Grammar School agreed to pay experienced teachers $140,000 by January, matching Brisbane Girls Grammar and setting the pace for the state.
Brisbane Grammar School won approval to pay senior teaching staff as much as $140,000 by next January, matching Brisbane Girls Grammar School's current rate of $135,206. The Independent Education Union Queensland said staff noticed the pay difference between schools on opposite sides of the lane and pushed for parity.
Brisbane's private schools now lead Queensland on teacher wages. Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) paid staff an average of $149,000 in 2024-25 but caps general teachers at $130,996 base salary.
The latest Commonwealth data showed the average wage across 40 Brisbane private secondary schools was about $117,000. State school teachers currently earn base salaries between $86,600 and about $126,700 after a September wage order, with the average around $117,000.
The Catholic sector is next to negotiate fresh deals.
