Qld youth detention workers secure pay rise and retention bonuses
Pay deal brings raises, early progression for new starters, and bonuses: $3,000 at five years, $6,000 at ten.
Queensland youth detention workers have accepted a pay deal from the state government. The deal follows months of negotiations and industrial action.
Talks began in March. The Australian Workers' Union pushed for better conditions after hundreds of reported assaults on detention staff.
Workers staged strikes in June, August and September over overcrowding and understaffing. The deal includes early progression for new starters and retention bonuses: $3,000 after five years of service and $6,000 after ten years.
Union secretary Stacey Schinnerl said members fought hard through "significant protected industrial action". The offer still requires a member vote to be finalised.
