NSW family discovers loved one dead only upon hospital arrival
A family learned their loved one had died 15 hours earlier when they arrived at Tamworth Hospital.
Steve Kandemir died in the early hours of Tuesday at Tamworth Hospital while on end-of-life care. The family arrived 15 hours later for a routine visit, unaware he had passed away.
A nurse told them the devastating news by searching hospital records on a computer screen. Kandemir's sister, listed as next of kin, was never formally notified, the family claims.
They received a missed call at 2:27am on Tuesday from a private number with no message left. The family said they would not have brought their children to the hospital had they known.
Kandemir, originally from Armenia, had been a close friend of the Bartholomew family for around 30 years. He was able to donate his eyes, giving sight to another person.
