NSW senator Shoebridge elected Greens leader
David Shoebridge won a secret ballot to lead the Greens one day after Larissa Waters stepped down due to chronic kidney disease.
The NSW senator defeated Sarah-Hanson Young and Mehreen Faruqi in a closed ballot, running on a joint ticket with Victoria's Steph Hodgins-May. Shoebridge spent 12 years in the NSW Legislative Council before moving to federal parliament in 2022.
Waters announced her departure on Monday night after her chronic kidney disease worsened. Waters' doctors advised a slower pace than leading a political party allows.
Larissa Waters plans to return to the Senate once she recovers. Waters had led the Greens since May last year, after former leader Adam Bandt lost his Melbourne seat at the election.
